New Park Bridge Opens at Kicking Horse Canyon

The new Park Bridge along the Trans-Canada Highway in Kicking Horse Canyon has been completed ahead of schedule, announced Premier Gordon Campbell.

  • Constructed under Phase 2 of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project, the Park Bridge is a 405-metre span featuring five piers reaching up as high as 90 metres.
  • Under a partnership agreement, the Government of Canada provided up to $62.5 million and the Province of British Columbia was responsible for the remaining funding to complete the $130-million Phase 2 project.
  • The provincial contribution to Phase 2 is part of British Columbia's three-year, $2.3-billion transportation investment plan.

Out-of-School Child Care Subsidy Rate to Increase

Families with children aged six to 12, who receive a child care subsidy for out-of-school child care, will see their monthly subsidy amount increase beginning Sept. 1, announced Minister of State for Child Care Linda Reid.

  • For children in out-of-school care for four hours or less per day, the rate increases to $8.50 per day or $170 per month, up from $147.56.
  • For children in out-of-school care for more than four hours per day, the rate increases to $10 per day or $200 per month, up from $173.
  • An estimated 13,300 children and 10,000 families will be positively affected by this increase.

Welcome to Your Home Kits Help Low-Income Families

Low-income and other vulnerable British Columbians who are moving into provincially subsidized housing developments will benefit from a one-time, $1-million grant provided to the BC Non-Profit Housing Association for "Welcome to Your Home" starter kits, announced Minister of Employment and Income Assistance Claude Richmond.

  • "Welcome to Your Home" kit will contain over 100 essential items for the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom including cooking sets, cutlery and utensils, bedding, towels, toiletries, basic first aid supplies and a tool kit.
  • Almost 1,700 kits will be distributed by the BC Non-Profit Housing Association.
  • The approximate value of each kit is $570.
