Premier Gordon Campbell, Health Services Minister George Abbott and Surrey-Tynehead MLA Dave S. Hayer look at the model of the new Surrey Outpatient Hospital. The hospital will be almost a third larger than originally planned, and will take 450,000 patient visits when it opens, growing to over 600,000 visits by 2020.

More Beds and New Larger Outpatient Hospital for Surrey

Patient care in Surrey and the Fraser Valley took a major step forward as Premier Gordon Campbell announced the opening of 73 new acute care beds at Surrey Memorial Hospital and the start of construction on the new Surrey Outpatient Hospital.

  • The four-storey Outpatient Hospital is expected to accommodate approximately 450,000 annual outpatient visits when it opens.
  • At the outpatient hospital, patients and health professionals will also benefit from $45.8 million in brand-new, state-of-the-art medical equipment.

Construction Begins on New Mental Health Facility

Premier Gordon Campbell and Health Services Minister George Abbott launched construction at the future site of the new, $9-million Cypress Lodge, a 20-bed mental health rehabilitation facility that will provide residents with individualized care in a supportive, community-like setting.

  • Cypress Lodge is one component of the Riverview Redevelopment Project, which is part of government’s $138-million capital commitment to build new mental health facilities across B.C.
  • Scheduled for completion in late 2009, Cypress Lodge will be located on the Riverview Hospital grounds.
  • Investing in mental health and addictions is part of government’s Pacific Leadership Agenda to improve the health of citizens and to renew the public health system.

Premier Announces $31-Million Cycling Investment

Cyclists throughout British Columbia will benefit from new, safe and high-quality cycling trails, bike lanes, bike lockers and more, thanks to Bike BC, a $31-million program for cycling infrastructure.

  • Bike BC funding brings the total cycling investment the Province has made since 2001 to $114 million.
  • One of the projects already benefiting from Bike BC is the expansion of the Central Valley Greenway through Vancouver.

  • According to Statistics Canada, B.C.’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell last month to 4.2 per cent from 4.3 per cent a month earlier, well below the national average of 6.1 per cent. Since 2001, British Columbia employment has added more than 428,000 jobs. British Columbia’s average weekly wage is third-highest in the country at $766, and the average hourly wage is more than $21 per hour.

  • The Thompson River bridge near Lytton will be renamed in honour of the great Lytton First Nations chief and peacemaker David Spintlum (Cexpe’nthlEm). Chief David Spintlum was a respected hereditary leader and chief of the Thompson Indians (Lytton First Nations).
