Premier Gordon Campell and Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon take the first ever trip on the Canada Line, from Bridgeport Station to Vancouver International Airport.

First Passengers Mark Canada Line Milestone

The first passengers rode the new train on a trial run of the Canada Line from Bridgeport Station to the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) Station.

  • The Canada Line will ensure reliable transportation for an estimated 100,000 riders every day by 2010 – and increasing to close to 125,000 per day by 2021.
  • When finished in 2009, the Canada Line will carry people between the centre of Richmond, YVR and Vancouver’s Waterfront Centre in 25 minutes or less.

Province to Fund Insulin Pumps for Children

Government will fund insulin pumps for eligible children with type 1 diabetes, as of Nov. 17, 2008, endocrinologists and pediatricians can apply for insulin pump coverage for their patients, aged 18 and under, through the Province’s special authority process.

  • There are approximately 2,200 children with type 1 diabetes in British Columbia.
  • Insulin pumps cost approximately $6,500 each and the expanded coverage will provide new pumps for approximately 200 patients each year at a cost of about $1.5 million annually.

First-Ever Incremental Treaty Agreement Reached

The Province and the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations have achieved an unprecedented incremental treaty agreement (ITA) that will provide benefits to the First Nation and B.C. in advance of a final treaty.

  • The Tla-o-qui-aht ITA is a four-year agreement which will transfer approximately 63 hectares of land and provide capacity-building funding totalling $600,000 to the First Nation.
  • The land, comprised of five provincial Crown land parcels located within the District of Tofino, will be transferred to the Tla-o-qui-aht in fee simple and will remain under the jurisdiction of the district.
