Minster Colin Hansen presents the provinces second quarterly report earlier this week. Hansen also introduced the Economic Incentive and Stabilization Statutes Amendment Act which was passed in the Legislature on Thursday, November 27, 2008.

New Economic Legislative Amendments Passed

Premier Gordon Campbell’s 10 point economic plan has been unanimously passed in the B.C. Legislature this week.

  • The new Legislation will provide families and small businesses with tax relief while taking action to keep B.C.’s economy strong and competitive.
  • The plan also includes relief for industry as it provides owners of major or light industrial property a credit that reduces their school property tax by 50 per cent.

Premier Announces Route for Olympic Torch Relay

Premier Campbell met with representatives from VANOC and the Four Host First Nations to unveil the route for the Olympic Torch Relay for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

  • Beginning and ending right here in B.C. the route will include 266 B.C. communities along the way.
  • The route will cover a distance of 45,000km and takes place over 100 days. The relay will end at BC Place with the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron.

Municipalities Receive $15.9 Million in Grants

Sixty-three local governments will benefit from a total of $15.9 million in provincial grants-in-lieu of property taxes.

  • The annual grants are based on the assessed value of provincially owned office buildings and other properties in each municipality.
  • Each municipality sends a portion of its grant-in-lieu to its regional district, and those local governments use the money to help pay for local services.

  • Starting this month, British Columbians can simply dial 8-1-1 to get 24/7 health information, medical advice and help navigating B.C.'s health-care system.

  • The Province is investing nearly $400,000 to support plug-in electric vehicles. There will be up to 34 plug-in electric vehicles in operation and being monitored in British Columbia. The initial vehicles are four Toyota Prius converted to plug-in hybrid electric and two pick-up trucks converted to plug-in battery electric.

  • Lorne Swanell, the province’s oldest living forester, at 100 years, was honoured by the province this week, with the creation of a $1,500 bursary to the University of Northern British Columbia’s Ecological Science and Management program in his name. His designation as Registered Professional Forester #6 (retired) now makes him the oldest living forester in British Columbia.
