New Transit Line to Reduce Congestion, Improve Mobility and Create Jobs Under Canada’s Economic Action Plan
Metro Vancouver residents will benefit from the construction of the new Evergreen Transit Line, thanks to a major new job-creating investment from the Government of Canada’s Building Canada Fund.
- The Evergreen Line will mean more than 8,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction.
- The Evergreen Line Project involves the construction of a new 11-kilometre rapid transit line running from the Lougheed Town Centre in Burnaby to the Coquitlam Town Centre, via Port Moody.

Province Awards $6.2 Million for Arts and Culture
The Province has awarded more than 260 grants totalling more than $6 million to artists and cultural organizations in British Columbia through the most recent round of BC Arts Council funding.
- Grants were awarded to artists and organizations from a range of artistic disciplines, including visual and media arts, music, and creative writing.
- The BC Arts Council was established by the Province with the mandate to provide encouragement and support to the arts and cultural community.

Law Reforms On Guns, Gangs Focus of Ottawa Meetings
Solicitor General John van Dongen and Attorney General Wally Oppal travelled to Ottawa to seek the support of all federal parties for B.C.’s action plan on guns and gangs.
- Matters the ministers intend to discuss include:
- The need for major bail reform to increase public safety; Eliminating “2-for-1” credits for time served while awaiting trial, particularly for bail breaches, weapons or violent crimes; Expanding the abilities of police and prosecutors to obtain and use wiretap evidence, especially for new voice, text and email technologies; Simplifying evidence disclosure requirements to expedite prosecution.

New Development Increases Care for Victoria Seniors
Premier Gordon Campbell was joined by Health Services Minister George Abbott, Vancouver Island Health Authority representatives and community partners to open Selkirk Place, a new 258-unit, $40-million campus of care that will provide seniors with greater access to more housing and care options.
- Selkirk Place offers 217 residential care beds and 41 assisted living units for independent living all on the same site.
- The Province through Vancouver Island Health Authority is providing annual funding for 185 residential care beds at a cost of $9 million and providing $300,000 annually for rent and hospitality services in 25 assisted living units.
