Celebrating the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay

Friday October 30, 2009 marked the arrival of the Olympic Torch to British Columbia and the first day of the 106 day Torch Relay.

  • The torch arrived to Victoria on a traditional Coast Salish First Nations Canoe.
  • The first torch bearers were Canadian Olympic athletes Simon Whitfield and Catriona Lemay-Doan.
  • This Olympic Torch Relay is the longest relay in all Olympic history travelling over 45,000 kilometres.

Premier and MP Kamp Open new Pitt River Bridge

Premier Gordon Campbell and Randy Kamp, Member of Parliament for Pitt Meadows—Maple Ridge—Mission, officially opened the new Pitt River Bridge, which will reduce congestion and cut travel times for the almost 90,000 vehicles that cross each day.

  • With its strategic location linking the CP Intermodal Terminal and Lower Mainland ports, the Pitt River Bridge and Mary Hill Interchange Project is a critical component of the Gateway Program.
  • The new Pitt River Bridge replaces the two existing bridges with a new seven-lane bridge that will ease congestion and eliminate backups that were caused by the counter-flow system.
  • Construction of the new bridge was completed on budget and on schedule.

  • New regulations to protect consumers by prohibiting abusive lending practices and limiting fees and interest rates charged by payday lenders come into effect Nov. 1, 2009.

  • The rights and entitlements of Foster Parents have been clarified and enshrined in a document signed by the Minister of Children and Family Development and the B.C. Federation of Foster Parent Associations (BCFFPA). The Foster Parent Rights document defines the entitlements and expectations of foster parents and recognizes their commitment, skills and contribution to vulnerable children and families in British Columbia.

  • Sixty fewer lives were lost and 4,196 fewer injuries resulted from motor vehicle crashes in 2008 compared to 2007, due to a concerted effort by a 110-member integrated traffic safety unit that works alongside local traffic police to make British Columbia roads safer.
