Province Welcomes Royal Couple On Four-Day Visit

British Columbians welcomed Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, as the Royal Couple began a four-day visit to the province this past Friday.

  • The B.C. portion of the Royal visit began this past Friday with an official welcome and public event outside at the Parliament Building.
  • The Royal Couple’s official visit to Canada began on November 2 in Newfoundland and Labrador and included stops in Ontario, the National Capital Region and Quebec.

China Trade Mission Ends Successfully

British Columbia’s largest ever forestry trade mission to China ended on a high note with new orders to close off another record-breaking sales year, announced Forests and Range Minister Pat Bell.

  • Tour delegates also participated in events to launch a new wood-frame construction building code for Shanghai and to celebrate a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the City of Shanghai to use wood-frame construction in affordable housing.
  • Forest industry delegates were able to build on previous business contacts and make some new contacts on the trade mission.
  • Companies participating in the China mission estimate they have generated sales of 156 million board feet of lumber to China for November and December.

In its Autumn 2009 Provincial Outlook, the Conference Board of Canada forecasts British Columbia to record 4.2 per cent real GDP growth in 2010, the highest rate in the country. In addition, the Conference Board predicts B.C.'s retail sales, GDP per capita, disposable income per capita and employment rate will be above the national average in 2010.
