Premier Gordon Campbell and VANOC CEO John Furlong celebrated the 100-day countdown to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games by lighting a new set of 14-metre tall Olympic Rings located on the harbour outside of the new Vancouver Convention Centre.

2010 Winter Games Create Jobs, Stimulate Economy Pricewaterhousecoopers Report Shows

A recent study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers highlights the wide range of social and economic impacts of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games for B.C.

  • The report covered the period of 2003 to 2008, and positive impacts were recorded in all eight areas studied. The greatest impacts occurred in employment, where more than 22,000 jobs were created.
  • In addition, from 2003 to 2008, the Games generated between $684 million and $884 million in real gross domestic product (GDP) to B.C. and an additional $170 million in real GDP to Canada.

Olympic Rings Light Up Vancouver Inner Harbour

A set of 14-metre tall Olympic Rings floating in Coal Harbour that will shine throughout the Games were lit this week by Premier Gordon Campbell to mark the start of the 100-day countdown to the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

  • The rings have thousands of individual LED lights that can be programmed for complex light show displays and will be visible from around the harbour.
  • The Province now has two sets of LED Olympic rings greeting visitors in highly visible locations – Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and the City of Vancouver.

  • New regulations to protect consumers by prohibiting abusive lending practices and limiting fees and interest rates charged by payday lenders come into effect Nov. 1, 2009.

  • The rights and entitlements of Foster Parents have been clarified and enshrined in a document signed by the Minister of Children and Family Development and the B.C. Federation of Foster Parent Associations (BCFFPA).   • Sixty fewer lives were lost and 4,196 fewer injuries resulted from motor vehicle crashes in 2008 compared to 2007, due to a concerted effort by a 110-member integrated traffic safety unit that works alongside local traffic police to make British Columbia roads safer.
