B.C. AND HAIDA ACHIEVE HISTORIC RECONCILIATION PROTOCOL

Greater certainty in land use decisions through shared decision making, increased prosperity through responsible economic development on the land base and a commitment to continue working together towards a comprehensive reconciliation will all result from a historic reconciliation protocol – Kunst’aa guu - Kunst’aayah, which means “the beginning” – signed by Premier Gordon Campbell and Guujaaw, President of the Haida Nation.

  • The Province also committed to renaming the Queen Charlotte Islands as Haida Gwaii, in recognition of the long history and habitation of the Haida Nation.

BC AT FOREFRONT OF CLIMATE ACTION

British Columbia has taken some of the strongest climate action measures anywhere in North America, including implementing the world’s first broad-based, revenue-neutral carbon tax.

  • British Columbia has taken several key steps since 2007 to reduce emissions including implementing the world’s first broad-based, revenue-neutral carbon tax on all fossil fuels.
  • In advance of the Copenhagen conference, British Columbia released a policy document today outlining detailed actions and policies it has committed to or has implemented and is encouraging other national and sub-national governments to consider.

  • The province released a call for interest on BC Bid to explore sponsorship opportunities to support a contest to develop software applications targeting climate action and youth. The contest will encourage web developers to design fun, dynamic and innovative software applications for the internet and mobile devices. The applications will use government data sources on climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. The contest’s goal will be to create a series of climate applications that link citizens to data on climate action in a way that is accessible, interesting and meaningful.
