KITIMAT LNG IS ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY, BUT NDP ARE ABSENT

Why won’t NDP MLAs step forward to support a huge economic development opportunity in Kitimat, asks Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad.

“In my visits to Kitimat, local residents have emphasized just how tough things are getting and especially now with the Eurocan announcement," says Rustad. "We want to work with the community, workers and their families to help them through this transition and that means seizing and championing every opportunity to turn their local economy around.”

“The Kitimat LNG plant, export facilities, pipelines, and the thousands of jobs that come with them are a part of the solution to Kitimat’s economic challenges, but NDP MLA Robin Austin has been silent on the issue. He hasn’t even asked to meet with the Energy Minister. That’s not the way to represent a community,” says Rustad.

The NDP’s lack of a clear position on projects like the Kitimat LNG facilities and infrastructure is disrespectful to the people in the North, who are looking for new opportunities.

“I and my colleagues are working tirelessly to get this project delivered, but the NDP members have been nothing but silent.  Representation is about working towards what’s right for the future of your constituents,” says Rustad.

“Whether it’s bioenergy to renew the forest industry, or building on B.C.’s enormous advantage with oil and gas, our government has been working hard to ensure that we’re helping to create good jobs for people across the north, and around B.C.”
