NDP Plan To Turn Lights Out On B.C. Economy

VICTORIA – Long opposed to green energy projects, today the NDP revealed they are also against increased power production through BC Hydro.

“The NDP shows themselves to be completely confused when it comes to ensuring British Columbia has a reliable, green and B.C. produced energy source,” says Energy Minister Blair Lekstrom. “I know the opposition is opposed to the clean, renewable power producers in this province. Now they’re opposed to BC Hydro. That just doesn't make any sense. We have a plan to grow British Columbia’s economy, create jobs and ensure we can meet the power needs of future generations.”

Today in the Legislature, NDP energy critic John Horgan and NDP MLA Katrine Conroy called on the province to cancel a deal to purchase a share of the Waneta dam, a proposal that will benefit all British Columbians by providing a cost-effective source of power. The project is currently under review by the BC Utilities Commission.

This reckless call to stop BC Hydro from increasing its production goes along with the fact the NDP have opposed every clean, renewable project in the province.

“We’re committed to building an energy and electricity self-sufficient province and will meet that commitment by 2016,” says Lekstrom. “We are doing that through new generating activity produced by BC Hydro and through independent power producers of British Columbia. The NDP may want to turn the lights off, but our plan will see B.C. become an energy powerhouse and meet the needs of a growing economy.”
