NDP Two-Faced on IPPs

VICTORIA – Stikine NDP MLA Doug Donaldson offered a clear glimpse of his hypocrisy on Independent Power Projects, including bioenergy, by telling his constituents that he supports the Suskwa co-generation project, but voting against the budget that supports these very types of projects.

“It’s distressing that the Stikine MLA chooses to say one thing at home, but something very different here in Victoria,” said Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad. “It’s opportunistic and cynical, and the people of Stikine deserve better from their MLA.”

“It seems the NDP are trying to score political points at home and hoping no one notices they have voted against every IPP proposed in the province,” said Energy Minister Blair Lekstrom.

During the 2009 election, the NDP campaigned aggressively against IPPs, including bioenergy, wind, solar and co-generation sources of clean, green electricity and the jobs that they create.

“Bioenergy and IPPs are an important part of B.C.’s energy future,” said Rustad. “They are creating new jobs in a new economy, and they’re improving the environment for our kids and grandkids. The NDP are being reckless and incompetent by opposing IPPs.”

Today in the Legislature, Donaldson was speaking against a Private Member’s Motion, forwarded by BC Liberal MLA Rustad, which resolved that the House recognize the importance of continuing to build and develop new markets for BC wood and forestry products in China, India and Korea.

During the campaign, in response to a question from the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition, Donaldson said that he believed “...IPPs as a wholesale sell-off of a public resource that will result in environmental devastation and higher power prices.”
